In the Spring of 2019, I applied for the incredible opportunity to travel to Sierra Leone, Africa and teach adaptive sports to high schools and people with physical disabilities. As an athlete, this experience impacted me greatly. Once I started attending school at Purdue University and stopped participating in competitive athletics I was missing that comradery. After research and reaching out to a mentor, I discovered there was a wheelchair basketball team in Lafayette, just 15 minutes down the road. I showed up to a practice, introduced myself and the next practice they asked if I was interested in coaching. I knew very little about the adaptive rules and regulations but was happy to go through the NWBA certification, jump in a chair, get schooled in every scrimmage, and learn. The next four years of coaching were truly the best. I worked with the toughest people, pushed myself to be a more vocal leader, and became an advocate for accessibility in recreation.

After graduation I moved to Custer, South Dakota where I had lived two summers before. Without knowing it at the time this laid the ground work for my interest in travel and tourism. I worked for an outdoor shop, hot air balloon company, and two restaurants to save money for my own travels. I enjoyed this immensely. To share a place I love with others brought a smile to my face every day. To wake up, serve a couple breakfast, meet them at the outdoor shop to get them new trekking poles for a hike I recommended, and to serve them a celebratory drink at the bar after that hike was the coolest day. Those long days on my feet were well worth the traveling I got to experience after South Dakota. After those travels, Bryce and I moved to Morgantown, West Virginia. During this time I started a career in hospitality at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in the Recreation Department. I started out facilitating activities such as a high ropes course, paintball, rock climbing, and worked my way up to Lead Recreation Coordinator facilitating Jeep off-road experiences, the adventure zipline, and snowboard lessons. From there I worked up to Activities Supervisor, ensuring my team was set up for success and activities ran smoothly with safety, guest experience, and employee satisfaction at the forefront of my decisions everyday.
